Apple Pie Turon
Apple Pie Turon is a fun way to use up apples and celebrate fall! This fun and easy recipe makes for a great little dessert. These are sweet and crispy little packages of love that will definitely disappear quickly!

It’s apple season again! I recently took a trip with my husband to our local apple orchard in the Hamptons, The Milk Pail. It was a great way to escape the doldrums of being cooped up inside 24/7 and stretch our legs. It’s also one of our fall rituals that we make a point to do every year as a family. The weather was also super cooperative, so it was a super lovely day! They have a huge pumpkin patch, a corn maze, and they grow their own apple varieties. Their market is also a must see. It has the most wonderful apple cider donuts that they make fresh, as well as other fresh apple baked goods.
What is Apple Pie Turon?
Turon (Tuh-RON) is a Filipino snack typically made from sliced ripe plantains and/or jackfruit. The fruits are rolled in brown sugar, encased in spring roll wrapper, and then fried until golden brown and crispy. It’s a popular street snack, as well as a sweet dessert for parties.
However, you can use the name for other desserts. There is a turon made with sweet mung bean and lumpia wrapper in Malabon, a city in the Philippines.
Since my husband and I live on Long Island in New York, apples are much more abundant than plantains. I had a hankering for turons but the plantains at the grocery were all unripe (Boo!) so I got to thinking, since apple pie also has sugar, cinnamon, and a crust, why can’t I make a turon version?
Let me tell you, my little experiment proved to be very successful. The apple did not turn to mush, the sugar was caramelized, and the wrapper became super bubbly and crisp! These apple pie turon were amazing fresh out of the hot oil, with more cinnamon sugar tossed all over. It was sweet, sticky, and finger-licking good.
I also made my own spring roll wrapper and I think that gave these an extra oomph. It bubbled and crisped up within seconds of hitting the hot oil! However, I will not knock the easy convenience of a store bought spring roll wrapper. Either way, you will have an amazing dessert!
What you will need for this recipe
What’s so great about this treat is that it needs only FIVE ingredients! Here’s what you will need:
- Apples (use a variety that’s good for baking)
- Turbinado sugar (or raw brown sugar)
- Cinnamon
- Spring Roll Wrappers (our recipe for DIY wrappers here)
- Egg whites, to help seal the turon. You can also use water.
Once you slice your apples, roll them into your cinnamon sugar mixture. Encase and wrap them in the spring roll wrappers, and seal them shut with egg whites. Fry them for four minutes, and you’re done! Super easy, right?
Tips for your best Apple Pie Turon
A few things to note for making Apple Pie Turon:
- Seal them shut. Any open areas in your turon will expose the apples inside to the hot oil and you risk having the apple’s juice and hot oil mixing and causing hot oil splattering.
- Heat your oil to the right temperature before frying. If your oil is not at the optimal frying temperature, you risk making oily turon, due to them needing more time in the frying oil in order to brown.
- To also prevent soggy turon, place the freshly fried turon on a cooling rack. I found that this method, as opposed to the usual way of placing on top of paper towels, helps the oil drip off better. You can set paper towels underneath in order to catch the dripping oil.
- While the turon is still warm, roll them in your leftover cinnamon sugar mixture. The heat of the turon will help melt the sugar and create a delicious glaze.

Apple Pie Turon
Ingredients
- 2 large apples (Honeycrisp, or any other type that is best for baking)
- 1 cup turbinado sugar
- 1 Tablespoon cinnamon
- Package of spring roll wrappers or homemade (25 pieces)
- 2 large egg whites
- Canola oil for frying
Instructions
- Mix sugar and cinnamon together in a shallow rimmed dish or bowl.
- Peel, core, and slice apples. Apple slices should be about 1/4" to 1/2" thick
- Place spring roll wrappers in front of you in a diamond shape.
- Roll an apple slice in the cinnamon sugar mixture and place horizontally on top of the spring roll wrapper. Fold over the bottom side of the wrapper over the apple, then fold the sides. Wet the remaining outer edges of the wrapper with egg white and then roll shut.
- Pour canola oil in a pan, about 1/2" high. Heat it over medium heat until it's 350F.
- Fry the rolls for 10 minutes, turning them halfway, if necessary, until golden brown all over.
- Once fried, place the turon rolls on a metal cooling rack set over paper towels to drain the excess oil. Sprinkle cinnamon sugar over them while they are still hot. Serve warm and enjoy!
